Hohner Chromonica 64C

The Big Chromatic
When it came on the market in 1938, the 64 Chromonica was the first
chromatic to boast a range of over four octaves. Thanks to the
additional bottom octave, it took the tonal range of the harmonica
into registers where it had never before been heard, as well as
brought many pieces from the classical repertoire within the reach of
the instrument. It also enabled the eerie, deep-toned growl and full
chords of amplified chromatic harp which swiftly became an integral
part of the blues tradition,a sound which lives on to this day.
It defined the industry standard for professional quality 4 octave
chromatics and has gone on to inspire generations of players in blues,
soul, jazz and classical music. Whether you play alone or in a band,
if you’re looking for a real workhorse 64 chromatic it’s still
your best bet.

THE SHORT BASS
In almost all music, the bass is the bottom line, the anchor that holds the whole thing
together. This is just as true for harmonica ensembles as any other line-up. It’s not a
simple matter to build a reed instrument that can respond with the speed and volume which
group performance demands, especially in the low register down to E2, but our professional
Bass harmonicas are made to do just that. They feature a hinged two part construction and
each channel contains two reeds, tuned one octave apart, giving a remarkably rich and powerful
sound. Here too, the lower reed of each pair is located on the inner rows to ensure balanced
microphoning and accentuate the bass. As with the Chord 48, our Bass harmonicas have now been
redesigned to optimize volume, handling and maintenance. The mouthpiece is integrated into the
new acrylic comb construction for unparalleled airtightness and the full screw together assembly
ensures ease of maintenance. The Bass 58 is the smaller of our two bass models, with a range of
E2 - E4, and is ideal for all types of harmonica ensemble.
